Submission Does Not Fight Inequality: My Greatest Takeaway from Entrepreneurship
“Submission does not fight inequality” is something I wrote in my interview with the Hub Singapore earlier this year and is something I still stand by today, especially in light of the current American political situation. The idea that remaining silent and submissive when faced with disapproval is not conducive to fostering an environment with equal opportunity for women is one I learned the hard way in my experience as a young, female entrepreneur. I want to remind the Candela community that positive action, female empowerment, and eco-consciousness are central to our brand identity and that we will continue to fight for these values even when our governments and peers may not. I started this company to bring meaning and purpose to makeup when I realized that no one understood how something as frivolous as makeup could have any impact. I started this company to provide an alternative to those ignored by other makeup brands. Finally, I started this company to spread a positive message and do my part to contribute to issues I care about, like environmental sustainability. It is troubling that the future leader of my home country has such a blatant disregard for movements I so strongly believe in, but this isn't the first obstacle in our journey and it won't be the last. I urge you to remember this message of perseverance even at times when you feel the most disappointed and discouraged in life because it is incredibly important to fight for what you believe in.
